Why Business?

About the College

“As the University of Nevada has grown, so, too, has our college. We have graduated men and women who are leaders in every important industry in our state. That has been the purpose of our college and its predecessors here at the university from the very beginning”

– Robert Weems, founding dean of the College of Business
at the University of Nevada, Reno.

For more than half a century, College of Business faculty have used their passion for teaching, relied on their expertise in working with organizations throughout the country and developed an ambitious research agenda that has helped educate and provide more than 10,000 business graduates with the judgment and skill set needed for a rapidly changing business world.

The College of Business integrates fundamental coursework in several key degree areas – accounting, economics, finances, information systems, international business, management, marketing, and supply chain management – in an effort to provide students with the flexibility and knowledge they will need as a manager, executive or business owner.

“Business today is about having all these skill sets in your quiver,” said Greg Mosier, dean of the College of Business. “In order to succeed, you can’t just call on one area of knowledge. Usually multiple areas are involved in making the right decision – an understanding of the global economy, knowledge in accounting or marketing, insight into how to manage people … the science of how to get all the people in your organization moving in the same direction. Our college is about helping our students bring everything they learn into a coherent, complete picture of what the 21st century language of business is all about.”

In addition to undergraduate education, the college’s MBA program, ranked among the top 20 in the country by Business Week, provides professionals with the additional knowledge they will need to stand out and advance further in the marketplace.

With small class sizes, an emphasis on hands-on experiential learning, a picturesque location at the base of the Sierra Nevada mountain range less than an hour’s drive away from Lake Tahoe and more than a dozen world-class skiing and snowboarding resorts, the College of Business’ focus is grounded in delivering the best student-centered college experience possible.
